Introduction

You and your partner have been hired to help create a new museum that will house music and art from the major periods in history. This museum is unique in that all the artwork and music are correlated so the visitor can see how characteristics seen in art periods are reflected in music of the same period and vice-versa. The museum has rooms where the art is displayed while compositions are heard on surround sound systems that correspond with the art.

It's your job to find the art and music that will best reflect each historical art/music period, show how they relate to each other and best fulfill the goal of the museum.

The Task

You and your partner must create a PowerPoint presentation which includes at least six slides representing the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic and 20th Century periods of art and music. Each slide will include the following:

  • an art example;
  • a music example ;
  • a statement that identifies the period;
  • a statement that identifies the composer and artist;

The slide show will be presented to the class at the end of the week. During the show, you will be expected to clearly articulate why each composer and artist was chosen for each slide and argue why they represent the period and how each sample represents the ideals/characteristics of art and music in that period. You will also create a bibliography slide to cite where you get your information from.

The Process

To accomplish the task, you must follow the steps listed below. It is important not to skip a step or do the steps out of order.

  1. First you'll be assigned a partner.
  2. Look over the evaluation rubric before you start step 3.
  3. You and your partner will research characteristics of at least 5 major music/art periods. Use a word-processor or note cards to record the information you gather. Organize the information so each card or heading represents each period. Follow these links to gather information: Music History 102, and Art Movements and Periods
  4. After you have gathered this information, discuss the characteristics of the periods with your partner. Formulate clear understandings of these characteristics and write down at least three questions and answers that relate to characteristics for each period.
  5. Next, find examples of composers and artists from each period. Download examples of their work to put in your PowerPoint presentation. Try to find at least two examples of artists and composers works so you have flexibility when you start building your presentation. Make sure you jot down a brief biography of each composer/artist and birth and death dates. Also write down the URL, date and time you download examples Follow these links to gather information: Classical MIDI Connection, Classical MIDI Files at MIDIWORLD, The National Gallery, Roxane's Early Music Site, The Metropolitan Museum of Art - The Collection, The State Hermitage Museum Collection Highlights, Medieval Art Museums and Galleries, Web Gallery of Art, WebMuseum Famous Paintings, Classical Music Composers.
  6. Begin building your presentation. Use the notes view feature so you can write the dialog for each slide as you go along.
  7. Practice your presentation. Print out the notes for your presentation and practice reciting your dialog. Decide who will talk when during the presentation and divide the work as evenly as you can. Have your partner listen carefully to make sure the dialog flows and doesn't have any grammatical errors. Make sure to allow time for the audience to see and hear your examples.
  8. It's time to present! You will be called on to come up and present your show.

Evaluation

The following rubric will be used to grade you and your partner's work. Look this over carefully so you know what is expected of you before you begin creating your presentation.
